The orchids that grace the island of Kauai are absolutely breathtaking. I found several spots in Carol Ann’s garden that would be great locations for orchids. It was a lot of fun finding coconut husks, which the orchids love to feed on, as well as rotted tree bark and porous lava stones. Below is my first attempt at building an ”orchid nest”.

I discovered a delight array of orchids at the Farmer’s Market. Learned a lot from a local grower, including feeding the orchids crushed egg shells as a organic fertilizer. Just sprinkle finely crushed shells at the base of the plant. The shells will slowly release their nutrients, feeding future blooms. This lovely orchid, D. King Trisong Deutsen, from Hanalei Orchids is a lovely addition to the area beside the garden gate.

This unique orchid, D. Palolo Sunshine, also from Hanalei Orchids is enchanting. It lively yellow adds a spot of color along the path.

Nine new orchid plants have been added to the garden and are adapting happily.
