The Hard Times Mine no. 3 has not been actively mined since the great Cedar Creek Gold Rush. The claim has not been worked by us beyond routine sampling and assessment work.

Gold is recovered from the stream bed and bench gravels located along the entire length of the claim. The gold originates from veins associated with igneous dikes that crosscut the northward extension of the Bitterroot Mountains. Chalcopyrite is the predominant ore material, quartz is plentiful. Copper and silver, in small amounts have also been found.

The Hard Times No. 3 Placer Gold Claim has exposed bedrock outcroppings and several natural gravel bars, a diversity that offers outstanding spots to pan, high-bank, dredge, sluice or metal detect. The incredible potential of this claim would keep anyone prospecting for a lifetime.

Absolutely beautiful place. Why is it called Hard Times?

Hello Cheri – The Hard Times Mine was the original name of the claim back in the late 1800’s – the old prospector that found the claim was called Four-Eyes Johnson (Four-Eyes because of the thick glasses he wore). I do not know why the name “Hard Times” but I speculate that the claim either got him out of hard times or in them – but I believe a claim name is like the name of a boat – it is bad luck to change it and all I know is that the claim has great gold potential and it is one of my favorite places on this great earth.

I agree it is one of the most beautiful places I have seen on this planet that God has blessed us with. The lucky person who gets this claim will have an untouched place in nature that is more than a gold mine…it is access to the protected forest and very few will ever be able to travel to such a beautiful and wonderful place. I know that this site will be in demand. The name will not be an issue…it will be a story to share. Thank you
